Living Life Beyond Diagnosis: Experiences, Ideas & Practicalities

26th January 2017 10.00*am – 4.45pm
*Registration from 9.30am

@ Amnesty International 17-25 New Inn Yard London, EC2A 3EA

This free* one day conference, supported by the BPS, provides an opportunity to explore the value of, and problems with, psychiatric diagnosis. Using some alternative ways of understanding, and responding, to emotional crises without diagnosis as inspiration, we will explore some of the challenging personal and social implications of moving beyond psychiatric diagnosis. This is not a conference aiming for a single unified voice – it provides a welcoming space to explore these issues.

The conference includes lunch, tea and coffee – to give us as much time together as possible (without people having to run off to find food).

Featuring:

– Katie Mottram (Spiritual Crisis Network) on understanding mental health difficulties as a spiritual transformation or breakthrough.

– John Read (BPS) on a conceptual alternative to diagnosis that brings together issues of power, threat response and personal meaning.

– Iseult Twamley (Open Dialogue, West Cork) on an approach that sees ‘psychosis’ as existing in the space between people.

Panel discussions and spaces to think about issues around diagnosis, including: identity, validation, navigating benefits, access to support, the law and much more. Includes contributions from NSUN and Peter Kinderman.

We welcome anyone who has personal, or professional interest in psychiatric diagnoses. Whilst we are the National Hearing Voices Network, this conference explores the whole range of experiences that could lead to someone recieving a diagnosis.

Hearing Voices Groups that are current members of HVN can apply for a first-come-first-served limited bursary to contribute towards travel costs. Please email us for more details (info@hearing-voices.org).
